Tooth brush abrasion is the most common cause of dental abrasion.
They are mainly associated with incorrect tooth brushing techniques. When a person repeatedly brushes with a hard bristled toothbrush, over time the bristles roughen the tooth surface to form fine depressions on the surface. Gradually the depression becomes deeper and wider, entering the sensitive layer underneath the enamel called dentin. This yellow dentin layer contains sensitive nerves and starts to feel pain when eating hot, cold, sour /sweet foods. This type of abrasion occurs mostly near the gingival gum line of the teeth.
Causes
Dental abrasion takes place over a period of time.
- Incorrect brushing techniques.
- Increased frequency of brushing.
- Too much pressure applied with brushing.
- Using hard bristled toothbrushes.
- Using abrasive toothpaste.
- Teeth enamel when repeatedly rubbed with external materials like oral jewelries, teeth grinding or a misaligned bite.
Signs and Symptoms
- Notches develop along the gingival margin.
- Scraped off enamel surface.
- Increased sensitivity due to the loss of dental enamel.
- Tooth decay.
- Tooth loss.
Keys to prevent the damage of tooth enamel
- Use fluoride rich toothpaste to strengthen your enamel.
- Avoid vigorous brushing techniques.
- Use nonabrasive toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush to brush your teeth.
- Hold the toothbrush at 45-degree angle and brush the tooth in back and forth motion using short strokes.
- Quit habits like nail biting, chewing/biting hard objects.
- Visit your dentist/dental hygienist for regular checkups to ensure that your teeth are as healthy as possible.
Treatment
Unfortunately, dental abrasion cannot be reversed. When tooth enamel wears away, it doesn’t grow back. The treatment for tooth abrasion comes under one of three following categories based on the severity of the condition:
- Mild abrasions: with slight sensitivity can be simply cured by using soft bristled toothbrushes with Sensodyne toothpaste.
- Moderate abrasions: Desensitizing agents can be applied to the affected teeth by the dentist. These agents give immediate relief to the sensitive area. It is also advised to switch to Sensodyne toothpaste, and soft bristled toothbrush.
- Severe abrasions: Extreme sensitivity and pain due to deep grooves on the enamel surfaces do need a closure with dental fillings. The person is also recommended to use Sensodyne toothpaste with a soft brush.
Broken Tooth
Bruxism
Bruxism is characterised by the clenching/grinding of the teeth due to repetitive jaw-muscle activity
Cracked Tooth Syndrome
A broken tooth that doesn’t necessarily look broken.
Crowded Teeth
Dead Tooth
It may surprise you, but teeth do actually have living tissues.
Dental Anxiety
Dental Erosion
Dental erosion can be defined as the irreversible loss of tooth enamel caused by acids without involving bacteria.
Dry Socket
Dry socket also known as Alveolar Osteitis, is a common complication associated with tooth extractions.
Failing Old Silver Filling
Older filling also known as amalgam filling, have been used over years and are still being used today.
Gingivitis
In simpler terms, it is an inflammatory disease of the gingiva.
Gum Disease
Gum Recession
Gum recession occurs when the tissues around the teeth start to recede/pull back.
Halitosis
Halitosis is an unpleasant odour emitted from the mouth.
Impacted Wisdom Teeth
Third molars, commonly known as wisdom teeth, are located at the back of the mouth
Missing Teeth
Sensitive Teeth
A common dental condition that involves discomfort and pain when exposed to certain foods and temperatures.
