What is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a small cap that fits over an existing tooth. A dental crown is typically used when a natural tooth is discoloured, severely decayed, cracked or broken. The crown completely covers the tooth, strengthening the tooth and enabling you to avoid an extraction.
Crowns are the strongest possible solution for damaged and/or weak teeth and if installed correctly should provide you with long lasting results.
At Maxcare Otahuhu Dental we offer porcelain crowns. They are made to match the colour and shape of your natural teeth so, in time, you will forget it is there.
The Dental Crown Procedure: What to expect?
Fitting a Dental Crown will require a couple of visits to Maxcare Otahuhu Dental.
- Firstly, the tooth receiving the crown must be reshaped. Once shaped, a mould of your tooth is taken so that your crown can be fabricated in a dental laboratory. in the meantime, you will receive a temporary crown so you can still have a full smile.
- At your second appointment, your temporary crown is removed and the permanent replacement is checked for comfort and fit, before being bonded with specially developed dental cement. Your new permanent crown will look, feel and function just like your natural teeth.

Frequently asked Questions about Dental Crowns.
How long do dental crowns last?
Dental crowns can last up to 15 years. The life span of a crown depends on the amount of wear and tear the crown is exposed to and how well you follow good oral hygiene practices.
Is it Painful to Get a Dental Crown?
You will only need a local aesthetic to remain comfortable during the crowning process. There are mild toothaches and sensitivity but with the proper pain management, you will be fine.
Can a Dental Crown be Whitened?
Unfortunately, No. The materials that make the crown don’t respond to whitening treatments. If you decide to whiten the natural enamel, the crown will be different from the rest of the teeth. As part of your smile makeover, you can whiten your teeth before having a dental crown fitted.
Does a Dental Crown Require Special Care?
Your crown does not need special care. Treat your crown the same as your natural teeth with regular cleaning and flossing. It is important to understand that the underlying tooth, like all your teeth, is not protected from decay and gum disease. This is why you must stick to a good oral hygiene practice.
What is the difference between a dental crown and a dental cap?
There is no difference between a dental crown or a cap, they are the same thing. A ‘dental crown’ is the technical terminology whereas a ‘cap’ is a more convenient and often more understood term by the general public.
Can ACC help cover the cost of Dental Crowns?
Yes, if your need has arisen due to accidentally injury. Otherwise ACC will not cover the cost.
