What is a Dental Bridge?
A dental bridge is used to span the gap where missing teeth once were, filling the space with a synthetic tooth. Like a bridge spanning a river, dental bridges need support at either end. Fitting a bridge requires applying a crown to the teeth at either end of the bridge (abutment teeth) so that it can be held securely. Dental bridges are a permanent solution to missing teeth and unlike dentures a bridge is fixed in place and only a dentist can remove it.
A Dental Bridge provides many benefits:
- Restores a healthy bite to help chewing
- Improves your smile
- Reduces the damage remaining teeth suffer due to a misaligned bite
- Restores confidence after an injury or accident
- Preserves the shape and structure of your face
The Dental Bridge Procedure: What to expect?
Fitting a Dental Bridge may require several visits to Maxcare Otahuhu Dental.
Your initial visits will involve an examination of your teeth. This is done to ensure your remaining teeth are strong enough to support a Dental Bridge. We also need to make sure you do not have gum disease or any tooth infections.
The abutment teeth will be prepared for the placing of dental crowns. We will then take measurements concerning the area to be bridged, make an impression, and use a shade card to determine what shade your bridge will be so that it perfectly matches your natural teeth.
This information will all be sent to the dental lab so your new crowns and bridge can be created. In the meantime we will place a temporary bridge in your mouth. This will not look as good or be as secure as the final product, but it will preserve your appearance while you wait.
Once your new bridge is ready, you will need to come back to the clinic for the temporary Dental Bridge to be removed and the new one bonded in place. The visits will take approximately 1 hour – 1 hour and a half.
