Are you worried that your teeth may have holes or cavities? Do you feel pain when brushing your teeth or are you sensitive when eating hot and cold foods? You may have tooth decay and need to fill it. Dental filling helps restore teeth and relieve pain associated with cavities.
What is a Tooth Filling?
Teeth can become damaged by caries caused by a combination of factors such as mouth bacteria, sugary food and drinks and poor dental hygiene. Overtime, these factors can weaken enamel, break down the teeth and cause a cavity.
Once a cavity has formed, the tooth will continue to decay and become increasingly painful until a dentist is able to treat it.
Depending on the level of damage to the tooth, a dentist may recommend a tooth filling to fill in the cavity, repairing the damage caused by the decay and preventing bacteria from attacking the cavity further.
If the decay is beyond repairable by a filling, your dentist may suggest a root canal to repair the tooth or a tooth extraction to remove the tooth completely.

Signs you may need a filling
The three main symptoms which may lead you to believe you need a filling are:
A Broken Tooth
Sensitive to Cold or Hot Substances
Sensitive to Sugary Food or Drinks
Causes
Your teeth can experience decays or cavities for multiple reasons including mouth bacteria accumulation, poor dental hygiene and sugary food and drinks. These factors combined together weakens the enamel over time and can cause your teeth to break down or decay resulting in a cavity. If the cavity is left untreated the tooth will continue to decay until a dentist intervenes. If the decay reaches the nerve of your tooth, the decay can no longer be treated by a filling and will alternatively need to go through a root canal which is a more complicated and expensive procedure. Therefore, it is ideal to get your decay treated in the earlier stages.
Treatment
The treatment starts off with the dentist administering local anaesthesia to numb that area around the affected tooth to ensure the patient doesn’t feel any pain. The dentist then removes the decay from your tooth and prepares it for the filling. After this the filling material is laid and bonded to the tooth structure using a special light.
Types of Fillings
Composite White Filling
Composite fillings are one of the most popular filling types due to their strength and natural appearance. They tend to last a very long ( average of 7- 10 years) and can be matched to the exact colour of your surrounding teeth. These fillings blend in so well with the teeth that people often forget they had a stained or chipped tooth.
Advantages of composite white fillings are their natural appearance, their ability to bond weak teeth and they don’t require a lot of drilling of the natural tooth.
Gold Fillings
Some people prefer gold fillings for their appearance. They are also very strong and durable, lasts between 15- 30 years however, are less common nowadays.
Porcelain Filling
Porcelain fillings are also tooth coloured fillings and blend in well with your surrounding teeth. This type of filling is also very durable, resistant to staining and is the strongest type of filling but is also the most expensive. They can last for an average of 15 years.
