All you need to know about RCT?
Tooth pains has been categorised as one of the worst pain a human can experience. It can be caused by deep decay, tooth fractures or deep failed fillings can compromise the health of the nerve or pulp of the teeth. When bacteria from tooth decay or trauma exposes the nerve of the tooth, there is an inflammatory response that causes pain.
Root Canal Therapy is designed to remove the inflamed or infected nerve from your tooth root, relieve the pain, and then seal the inside of your tooth again with a plastic material and leave the tooth ready to be restored. It is the best alternative to preserve your teeth and avoid unnecessary extractions.
It usually takes about two to three appointments to get the procedure done. However, every case is different and both, the duration and the number of appointments (and cost) will depend on the affected tooth, its anatomy and number of canals. Your dentist will explain further during your free consultation.
Prosthodontics and Endodontics
A root canal therapy eliminates the organic components of the tooth (collagen, blood vessels, nerve extensions), making it more dried and brittle compared to vital teeth. Therefore, root canal treated teeth are more likely to fracture over time and it might need to get extracted.
To prevent this from happening, it is recommendable to get a more definitive restoration with a stronger material that can guarantee the tooth structure will be protected and hence maintained for longer in your mouth. These definitive restorations are commonly known as caps or crowns (See information about crowns here).
The crowns are also a widely used alternative when performing oral rehabilitation treatments (see full oral rehabilitation info here).

What is root canal therapy, and when do you need it?

- You may need it after deep decay, a tooth fracture, or a deep failed filling that affects the nerve
- Common signs include lingering hot or cold pain, pain on biting, gum swelling, or facial swelling
How much does a root canal cost in NZ?

How many visits does root canal treatment take?
Root canal treatment usually takes two to three appointments, and most sessions last about 45 mins. to 1 hour.
Do I need a root canal specialist (endodontist) or can a dentist do it?
We can complete many root canal treatments in-house, and we refer you to an endodontist if your case needs specialist care.
What happens after a root canal, and do I need a crown?
After a root canal, you often need a strong final restoration, such as a crown, to protect the tooth because it can become more brittle.
- We recommend completing the final restoration 3 months after treatment to protect the tooth, as root canal-treated teeth can become brittle and have an increased risk of fracture.
