All you need to know about RCT?
Tooth pains has been categorised as one of the worst pain a human can experience. It can be caused by deep decay, tooth fractures or deep failed fillings can compromise the health of the nerve or pulp of the teeth. When bacteria from tooth decay or trauma exposes the nerve of the tooth, there is an inflammatory response that causes pain.
Root Canal Therapy is designed to remove the inflamed or infected nerve from your tooth root, relieve the pain, and then seal the inside of your tooth again with a plastic material and leave the tooth ready to be restored. It is the best alternative to preserve your teeth and avoid unnecessary extractions.
It usually takes about two to three appointments to get the procedure done. However, every case is different and both, the duration and the number of appointments (and cost) will depend on the affected tooth, its anatomy and number of canals. Your dentist will explain further during your free consultation.
Prosthodontics and Endodontics
A root canal therapy eliminates the organic components of the tooth (collagen, blood vessels, nerve extensions), making it more dried and brittle compared to vital teeth. Therefore, root canal treated teeth are more likely to fracture over time and it might need to get extracted.
To prevent this from happening, it is recommendable to get a more definitive restoration with a stronger material that can guarantee the tooth structure will be protected and hence maintained for longer in your mouth. These definitive restorations are commonly known as caps or crowns (See information about crowns here).
The crowns are also a widely used alternative when performing oral rehabilitation treatments (see full oral rehabilitation info here).

Frequently asked Questions about Root Canal Therapy.
How to know I need a Root Canal Therapy?
Although dental pain is the greater indicator of nerve inflammation, there are some cases when this inflammation can be reversed without doing an RCT. However, here are some symptoms that might indicate you need further treatment:
- Tooth pain when you eat or drink very hot or cold foods/beverages and does not settle down after a few seconds.
- The pain worsens when you bite on something with the affected tooth.
- The gum around the tooth looks more red or puffy.
- Your cheek or face starts to swell up.
- You have had to take painkillers for the pain to pass.
You are getting the nerve out of my tooth? That must really hurt, right?
Not a bit!. Of course, you will need to get numbed up with an anaesthetic solution that will temporarily block all the sensitive responses from your tooth to your brain. This means the painful root canals are left behind in the past!. Additionally, our gentle dentists will make the numbing experience so much more tolerable.
But, if even with the local anaesthetic on you still feeling anxious or your tooth still a bit sore, there are some other relaxing techniques you can apply. For example, bring your favourite relaxing music and listen to it while you are in the chair (and avoid the noise of the drill). Also, applying breathing techniques, or going accompanied by someone you trust might help as well.
If you still feel this is not your cup of tea, talk to us! There are other alternatives to help you relax and make the procedure more pleasant.
How long will it take?
Can I lose my tooth if it is root canal treated?
Generally, a root canal therapy is a definitive treatment. However, there are some indications that you must follow after the completion of the procedure for it to be successful. For example, you absolutely must have the final restoration done (definitive filling, crown or cap) as soon as the RCT is finished, otherwise it can get re-infected and all your effort would be wasted.
Sometimes, the anatomy of some canals make it difficult to access and leave the canals completely clean and tidy. Therefore, you might need to keep that tooth on watch for some time and keep monitoring it with the help of your dentist by doing annual X-rays. If this is your case, the dentist will advise you what is best for you, even if you need to be referred to a Root Canal Specialist (Endodontist).
What are the postoperative instructions after getting a root canal?
- Although you can almost forget about that tooth, it is important that you continue going to your recall appointments every 6 to 12 months, so that the dentist can have under control any changes on your tooth or bone tissues and catch any problem on time.
- The final restoration must be out in place immediately after or at least 8 to 10 days after the treatment is finished.
- You must avoid biting onto hard foods such as nuts or bones that can potentially cause your tooth to fracture.
- Keep excellent oral hygiene and visit your dentist periodically.
