In simpler terms, it is an inflammatory disease of the gingiva(gums)
caused by the buildup of plaque/bacteria which is present in the mouth. These bad bacteria produce acids that attack your tooth enamel and can cause infection to the gums. Most forms of gingivitis at an earlier stage are reversible. But when left untreated or unnoticed, it becomes more complicated leading to surrounding tissue destruction and bone resorption.
Causes:
The most common cause of gingivitis is poor oral hygiene, that encourages plaque to deposit on the teeth and also under the gumline, if it stays there for a longer time it can become hardened which now makes it impossible to remove with your manual toothbrush. Other causes includes:
- Smoking.
- Chewing tobacco.
- Older age.
- Dry mouth.
- Poor nutrition.
Symptoms includes:
- Red puffy gums.
- Bleeding when brushing or flossing.
- Painful when touching.
- Bad breath.
This damage has the possibility of becoming permanent if left untreated. Make sure to see your dental professional immediately if you notice any of these symptoms to receive a proper assessment.
Tooth Care:
Brush twice daily, preferably with an electric toothbrush which helps to remove the bacterial plaque from your teeth. Be sure to use a toothpaste containing fluoride to strengthen the teeth and also to prevent the damage that the bacterial plaque causes. After brushing rinse thoroughly with an antibacterial mouthwash to help fight plaque, gingivitis and also to reduce bad breath. Floss at least once a day to remove food particles and plaque between teeth.
Treatment:
- Visit a dentist for at least once for regular checkups.
- Stick to a healthy diet and follow a good oral hygiene practice.
- Brush the teeth twice daily with antibacterial toothpaste and a soft bristled brush/electric toothbrush.
- Floss at least once a day.
- Swish with antibacterial mouthwash twice daily.
However, the best treatment for gingivitis is a professional dental cleaning done at least once a year. In addition, your dentist may recommend some guidance tips to help you have healthy beautiful gums.
